NEW DELHI - A 50-year-old businessman with two grown up daughters was arrested Thursday for allegedly abducting and raping a Delhi University student in his car in West Delhi, police said.

The incident took place Wednesday evening when the 17-year-old girl, a first year student of Bharti College, was returning from her college.

According to police, the girl had left her college at around 4 p.m. An hour later she was approached by Mukesh Singhal, inquiring about an address, in his grey coloured Wagon-R car.

“Singhal stopped his car and asked her an address. When she responded, he pulled her inside the car and took her to an isolated place where she was raped,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Sharad Agarwal told IANS.

The accused, a resident of Ashok Vihar in north Delhi, later dumped her in front of her college. The victim then approached the police and was taken to a hospital, where medical examination confirmed rape, Agarwal said.

“During interrogation, Singhal told police that he committed this heinous crime by mistake and would not be able to forgive himself,” the investigating officer said.

According to police, Singhal runs a paper producing factory and is the father of three children, including two daughters.

“The accused has been sent to 14 days judicial custody and the victim is in hospital,” police said.

“I am really ashamed of what my husband has done. Due to his heinous act we will not be able to face society,” Vibha, wife of the accused, said.

She also said her daughters are of marriageable age and her husband’s crime has ruined their future.
