ZAMBOANGA, Philippines — Officials say a powerful explosion has killed at least one person and wounded nine others at an airport in a southern Philippine city.

He said investigators were still trying to determine whether the fatality was the one carrying the explosive.

Mayor Celso Lobregat said the governor of Sulu province Sakur Tan was among the wounded.

Sulu lies south of Zamboanga. It is a stronghold of the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf militant group, which notorious for bombings, kidnappings and beheadings.
