Brinda Karat seeks justice for victims of Gujarat riots

NEW DELHI - In the backdrop of the arrest of former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Brinda Karat Tuesday asked the central government to ensure protection and justice for the victims of the 2002 Gujarat riots.
“The centre should intervene in the case involving the Gujarat Chief Minister (Narendra Modi),” Karat said after releasing a report on the Gujarat genocide witnesses here.
“The Ehsan Jafri murder which involves Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Given the ramification in Amit Shah’s (former Gujarat minister held for a staged shootout) case, the centre should ensure safety of witness in the Jafri case,” she said.
Modi was summoned March 21 by the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team in connection to a petition filed by Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri who was killed in the 2002 post-Godhra riots in Gujarat.
Sixty-nine people, including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, were killed in the Gulberg Society at Ahmedabad during the 2002 communal riots that followed the Godhra train carnage.
Talking about the report which sketches the difficulties faced by the witnesses testifying in the Gujarat riots case, Karat said she would also raise the issue of protection of the witnesses in parliament.
