NEW DELHI - Four labourers were killed and four sustained serious injuries when a speeding car ran over the men engaged in road repair work in south Delhi early Monday, police said.

The accident occurred around 1.30 a.m. when a Honda City ran over them near the Safdarjung flyover. The men were working with the public works department (PWD).

“Two of them died on the spot while two others, who were taken to AIIMS, succumbed to their injuries in hospital,” a police officer told IANS.

He said the four seriously injured were admitted to hospital.

“The driver of the car was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol. He lost control. He fled from the spot. Bottles of alcohol were recovered from his car. Two of those who were inside the car at the time of the accident have been detained,” the police officer said.

A labourer working at the site said: “We were busy with the repair job when the accident occurred. We had kept a sign board saying ‘men at work’ but a speeding car came at about 1.30 a.m. and ran over us. I escaped with minor injuries.”
