KABUL - At least 21 passengers were killed and 26 injured when a bus veered off the road in southern Afghanistan Monday, officials said.

The accident happened in the southern province of Kandahar, on the highway from Kabul to the provincial capital Kandahar city.

Two girls, two women and 17 men were killed in the accident, which was thought to have been caused by the high speed of the vehicle.

The injured were taken to a hospital in Kandahar city, some in critical condition.

Poor road conditions and reckless driving are the main causes of accidents in Afghanistan.
