NEW DELHI - Two labourers were killed and seven injured when a speeding car ran over nine people engaged in road repair work early Monday in south Delhi, police said.

The accident occurred 1.30 a.m when the car ran over the men working with the public works department (PWD) near the Safdarjung flyover.

“The driver of the Honda City car was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol and he lost control. He fled from the spot and bottles of alcohol were recovered from the car. We have arrested one of the occupants of the car,” a police officer said.

He added that the injured had been admitted to hospital.

Said one of the labourers working at the site: “We were busy with the repair job, we had kept a sign board saying ‘men at work’, yet a speeding car came at about 1.30 a.m. and ran over us. I escaped with minor injuries.”
