Mom, 4 kids die in early morning house fire in NYC
NEW YORK — Fire officials and neighbors say a fast-moving house fire in New York City has killed a mother and her four children.
The fire department says the children were 2, 7, 10 and 14. They lived with their mother in a second-floor apartment in the Staten Island house. Fire officials say all the tenants in the other three apartments got out safely.
The fire was very heavy when firefighters arrived on the scene. They got the call just after 4 a.m. Thursday.
The blaze in the Port Richmond section was declared under control at 5:48 a.m.
Fire officials say it originated on the second floor of the two-story house and quickly spread to the attic and through the roof.
The cause is under investigation.
