PANCHKULA - A gang of cricket bookies with links in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra has been busted with the arrest of four people here, police said Friday.
The bookies were arrested late Thursday from a rented accommodation in Sector 21 here, police said.
“Working on a tip-off, we raided the house and caught them red-handed while they were betting for their clients on the first test match between England and Pakistan, being played at Lords,” said Om Parkash Bishnoi, investigation officer of the case.
“Police also recovered Rs.65,000 and 15 mobile phones from their possession. During the interrogation they admitted to having links in New Delhi and in different cities of Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra,” he added.
Those arrested were identified as Rajesh Kumar, Sachin Kumar, both residents of Panchkula, about 10 km from Chandigarh, and Mohan Lal and Pintu Goyal from Punjab.
Bishnoi said the accused were staying in the rented accommodation for the last many months.
“We are trying to ascertain the details of the landlord and will check whether he was aware about this illegal business or not,” he added.
