Suspected Maoist sent to Gujarat Police custody

AHMEDABAD - Kura Amar, a suspected Maoist picked up by Gujarat Police from Hyderabad, was presented in a court in Gujarat’s Surat city Tuesday and was remanded to police custody till July 20.

Earlier, a conspiracy case was registered against him at the Kamrej police station in Surat for his alleged bid to spread the Maoist ideology in the state.

He was arrested in Hyderabad in a joint operation with Andhra Pradesh Police Monday, police said. His name surfaced during interrogation of some Maoist leaders arrested in Surat earlier.

A senior leader of the the Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist Janashakti group in Andhra Pradesh, Amar is said to have visited Gujarat at least six times in the last six years to hold meetings with his undercover colleagues, police said.
