SHIMLA - Fourteen Nepali labourers were rescued Tuesday after they were swept away by a swollen river in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district, officials said.

“The Nepali workers, who were residing in temporary hutments on the banks of the Pabbar river near Rohru town, were swept away in the morning as the water level suddenly rose due to heavy rainfall in the area,” Deputy Commissioner J.S. Rana told IANS.

He said the strong currents took them into the middle of the river where they managed to climb onto boulders, and were rescued with the help of ropes flung to them by rescue workers and local people.

The accident spot is 120 km from state capital Shimla.
