AGARTALA - A suspected Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agent was among the three people arrested in Tripura immediately after they entered India from Bangladesh, police said here Sunday.
“Acting on a tip off, police and intelligence officials arrested three people on the outskirts of the capital city Agartala late Saturday night,” a police officer told reporters on condition of anonymity.
According to the official, some arms and ammunition were also recovered from them.
Senior police officials, who are interrogating the arrested men, refused to divulge any information about them.
Last month, in a similar case, a court in Tripura had sentenced a Bangladeshi arms dealer Mamun Mian, 49, arrested for his suspected links with terrorists in March 2008, to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for forging documents relating to his identity.
The court found Mamun guilty of forging a voter’s identity card, a ration card, a PAN card, a driving licence and other documents used for identification.
A police official said: “A resident of Pallabin on the outskirts of Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, Mamun entered into India along with two associates in 2007 and was staying here as Suman Majumder with forged documents.”
Mamun was arrested for his involvement in anti-India activities and trafficking of arms and explosives. His two associates, both terrorists, are now under West Bengal Police custody.
