Rome, July 1 (IANS/AKI) About half of all European bank robberies occur in Italy, the Federation of Italian Bank Insurers (FIBA) has claimed.

“In 2009, in Italy, there were 1,744 bank robberies, 42 percent of the European total,” FIBA said Wednesday in a report.

On the average, one out of 15 Italian banks are robbed, a 50 percent rise between 1998 and 2008, FIBA said, adding that the number of heists have gone down over the last two years.

“The bank robbery trend is an emergency situation because workers are exposed to an immediate and serious danger,” said Alessandro Spaggiari, the FIBA head, during a conference held in Rome.
