Calif. mom facing felony in dog mutilation of son
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A mother whose 6-month-old son was mauled by a friend’s pit bull mix dog is charged with felony child endangerment.
Prosecutors charged Carrie Rae McKinney, who lives in San Diego County, on Tuesday in the April 3 incident in which her son’s genitals were mutilated. The child survived.
Police initially thought two dogs mauled the child, but Riverside prosecutor Gerald Fineman said Wednesday that the second dog was apparently outside.
The prosecutor says the attack was foreseeable, noting the dog had previously shown an interest in the baby’s diaper.
The 22-year-old mother is accused of leaving the infant unattended in a carrier at her friend’s Murrieta home.
McKinney has lost custody of her three children.
