Storms claim over 50 lives in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO - At least 51 people have been killed in storms which hit Brazil’s northeastern region in the past few days, authorities said Friday.
A total of 34 people died in the state of Alagoas while 17 others were killed in neighbouring state of Pernambuco. At least 56 people are still missing, Xinhua reported.
Out of 87 municipalities damaged in the storms, 30 declared state of emergency and 24 declared state of calamity.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited the damaged areas Thursday, and announced a package of $309 millions for the reconstruction.
