DHULE - Six people were Wednesday arrested with bundles of currency notes amounting to Rs.13 million from a Gujarat bus on the outskirts of Dhule in Maharashtra, police said.

“The cash was hidden in their vests and trousers. Some bundles were even stuck to their bodies,” a police official told IANS.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team swooped on the Gujarat State Transport Corporation bus around 1 a.m. and detained the culprits - all hailing from Gujarat - after subjecting them to a physical search which revealed the cash.

The accused claimed to be working on behalf of a courier company and were carrying the cash for a Surat-based party, police in Dhule, about 335 km from Mumbai, said.

As sending cash by courier is not legal, and the origin or intended destination of the cash was not clear, the police nabbed them for further investigations.

The six were caught from the Gujarat-bound bus journeying from Maharashtra’s Akola to Surat in south Gujarat. They said they were taking the cash from Jalgaon to Surat.

The accused have been identified as Mehul D. Patel, 19, and Gadabhai M. Patel, 49, (both from Surat), Sachin N. Patel, 21, Jitendrakumar R. Patel, 26, Sandeep M. Patel, 22, and Babubhai K. Thakur, 40, (all from Mehsana district).

Besides the police, the local income tax department too is involved in the probe, the official said.
