NEW DELHI - The Delhi Police Thursday shifted three children of a 28- year-old-woman, who was last week killed in an accident involving a Mercedes Benz being driven by a politician’s son, to a child care centre, an official said.
Meenakshi Devi of Badaun in western Uttar Pradesh was killed June 2 when a Mercedes sports car crashed into the taxi she was travelling in near R.K. Puram.
The car was being driven by Delhi politician Kanwar Singh Tanwar’s son Dinesh.
With no documents on her, Devi’s body remained in a morgue unidentified till June 6.
According to police, the deceased was identified by her eight-year-old daughter Preeti who had come to a police station looking for her mother.
“The girl identified Meenakshi’s belongings,” a senior police officer said.
Meenakshi’s husband had left her five years ago, and she was working in a shoe factory in northwest Delhi.
“The father abandoned the children five years ago and after the mother’s death, we handed the children over to the child care centre in Sarita Vihar,” a senior police officer told IANS.
“We will hand them over to their relatives only when they come with proper proof,” the officer added.
Kanwar Singh Tanwar was the richest candidate in Delhi during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections and fought the polls on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket. His son Dinesh has been booked for causing death due to rash and negligent driving.
“The investigation is in progress,” the officer added.
