PUNE - Three people were killed and nine injured when a municipal garbage van rammed into three shops Thursday in a village near this Maharashtra city, officials said.

“Of the nine injured, four are critical,” said Mohan Gore, Pirangut village headman. The village is 12 km from Pune.

Pune Mayor Mohan Singh Rajpal said: “Although the reason for the accident has not been ascertained, there are only two possibilities. Either the driver was drunk or he lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure.”
