Kolkata firing: Tripura trooper suspended

AGARTALA - The Tripura government Tuesday suspended a Tripura State Rifles (TSR) trooper who fired during the Kolkata civic polls injuring a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activist who has died.
The victim, Bapi Dhar, 43, succumbed to his injuries in a Kolkata hospital following loss of blood and cardiac arrest.
“The Tripura Police has suspended TSR trooper Sandip Sharma, 27, for (the) firing Sunday,” Tripura Police spokesman Nepal Das told reporters.
Dhar sustained leg injuries near a polling booth when he was fired at by the trooper in Patuli area in Kolkata’s southern outskirts.
Ten companies of TSR comprising 800 men went to West Bengal for the civic polls. Tripura has 13 battalions of TSR, nine of which can be deployed anywhere in the country as and when required.
