PANAJI - A central excise department official has been arrested after he was caught accepting a bribe from a scrap dealer, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said here Tuesday.
Central Excise Superintendent A.S. Patil was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI late Monday.
“The complaint was filed with us on Monday afternoon that A.S. Patil was asking for bribes for each truck loaded with scrap material, failing which he used to harass the complainant. We laid a trap and arrested Patil while accepting a bribe of Rs.18,000,” Superintendent of Police S.S. Gavli of the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch said at a press conference.
Patil was posted at the Bicholim branch of the central excise department, 20 km from here.
He has been remanded to two days in custody, the CBI official said.
“His properties (movable and immovable) in Goa and Mumbai are under scrutiny. We have already raided his house in Mumbai soon after his arrest here,” Gavli added.
