NEW DELHI - Congress president Sonia Gandhi Friday expressed “deep anguish and sorrow” over the train accident in West Bengal that claimed 65 lives and injured over 200 people.
“Congress president Sonia Gandhi has expressed her deep anguish and sorrow over the loss of lives in West Bengal and offered her condolences to bereaved families,” the Congress said in a release.
The engine and 13 coaches of the Mumbai-bound Howrah-Kurla Gyaneshwari Express derailed and were hit by a speeding goods train near the Maoist stronghold of Jhargram, about 155 km from state capital Kolkata, at 1.30 a.m. The train had left Howrah at 10.55 p.m.
Officials suspect the accident was due to sabotage by Maoist guerrillas.
