NEW DELHI - Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari Friday expressed shock and grief over the death of 65 people when the Howrah-Mumbai Gyaneshwari Express train derailed in West Bengal following suspected sabotage by Maoists.

According to a BJP statement, Gadkari has conveyed his condolences to the grieved families of those killed in the incident.

He has also expressed his heartfelt sympathies to the more than 200 people injured in the accident and those still trapped in the derailed and damaged bogies.

The Mumbai-bound passenger train derailed and was hit by a goods train travelling on the nearby track early Friday in Jhagram of West Midnapore district.

The toll in the accident is expected to go up as hundreds are still trapped in mangled bogies that derailed at 1.30 a.m.
