PANCHKULA - Irate over the laxity of Haryana police, a 45-year-old woman, who claimed she was raped, consumed some poisonous substance outside the office of the state police chief here Monday, police officials said.
The woman was identified as Darshana Devi, a resident of Professor Colony in Kurukshetra.
Darshana had registered a case against Dilpukar, a resident of Panipat district, in March 2010 alleging that he had raped her. She had come to meet senior police officials at Haryana Police Headquarters to discuss her case but after failing to meet them, she took the extreme step, said the police sources.
“After reaching the police headquarters, Darshana informed the security officials that she had consumed some poison. She was immediately rushed to the hospital, where her condition was stated to be stable,” said the spokesperson of Haryana police.
Darshana, mother of five children, had earlier expressed suspicion over the investigation by the local police into her case. The case was then transferred to the crime branch of the state police May 14.
Investigations revealed that Darshana had registered frivolous complaints against members of Dilpukar’s family.
During the last two years, the Haryana Police headquarter has been rocked by at least three cases of aggrieved women attempting suicide inside its premises.
In June 2008, a young woman from Rohtak had committed suicide after consuming a poisonous substance in the office of the Haryana Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order). She too was a rape victim.
