SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA (GaeaTimes.com)- Costa Rica was hit by a major earthquake on Thursday, May 20, at around 4:16 in the afternoon, according to reports. However, despite the considerable intensity of the earthquake, no major damages have been reported as of yet. Some power lines had been disrupted, but there was no loss of life, nor did the buildings suffer any noticeable damage. The Costa Rica earthquake is the second one to have hit the region is a span of two days. Just the day before, Peru had also been hit with a quake of considerable magnitude. Thankfully though, none of the two quakes caused any damage.
In fact, it is surprising that the Costa Rica earthquake did not cause any disruption at all. According to the Geological Survey of the United States, the earthquake measured 6.2 in the Richter Scale and was strong enough to be felt or miles around. The epicenter of the quake was about 42 miles toward the south of San Jose, the capital city, and it originated at a depth of about 38.8 feet. The quake was most strongly felt in San Jose, but the neighboring towns also felt it, among them Bahia Drake, Puntarenas and Perez Zeledon.
No tsunami warning has been issued after the earthquake. Although the tremor did not cause any damage, they did frighten the residents, as the earlier Costa Rica earthquake that occurred in January this year had been devastating. Panic ensued with the tremors, and the local television channels stalled the airing of the programs and concentrated on taking calls from the panicking citizens.
