REYKJAVIK, Iceland - The dramatic volcanic eruption that belched out the ash plume responsible for grounding much of Europe entered a new phase Monday - producing less smoke but bubbling with lava and throwing up chunks of molten rock.

LONDON - Britain sent Royal Navy warships on Monday to rescue those stranded across the Channel by the volcanic ash cloud and the aviation industry blasted European officials, claiming there was "no coordination and no leadership" in the crisis that shut down most European airports for a fifth day.

Iceland volcano activity increases LONDON - A geologist says activity has increased at an erupting Icelandic volcano, causing an ash plume to rise some 8.5 kilometers (5.3 miles) into the air.
