Gulf Coast welcomes Obama's pledge to restore land
NEW ORLEANS - After 50 years of watching wetlands created by the fertile Mississippi River turn into open water, Louisiana residents finally got what they'd long awaited: A U.S.

FARGO, N.D. - Residents hauled sandbags to the street, the National Guard departed, and city officials lined up bulldozers to tear down clay levees Thursday as the major risk of flood passed in Fargo and Moorhead, Minn.

FARGO, N.D. - They passed out cigars in Fargo on Saturday, but no matches just yet, as a flood-weary city that's spent the last week getting ready to hold back the Red River cautiously prepared to celebrate what appeared to be a successful defense against the swollen waterway.

FARGO, N.D. - Volunteers in North Dakota were in flood-fighting mode again Tuesday filling sandbags while contractors constructed clay levees along the fast-rising Red River to help protect nearby homes from the murky waters.

SYDNEY - Authorities declared two flooded farming regions in southwestern Australia natural disaster zones Monday as residents in one town nervously watched a river peak without breaking its levees.
