ALLAHABAD - A major fire broke out in a warehouse of the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) here Saturday morning, gutting machinery and equipment worth around Rs.50 lakh, an official said. No casualty was reported.

Eight fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire at the warehouse of UPPCL in Bamrauli area.

“Shortly after the fire erupted, it spread to a major portion of the warehouse, gutting transformers, cables and other machinery housed in a repairing unit,” Chief Fire Officer Satish Chandra told reporters in Allahabad, some 200 km from state capital Lucknow.

We managed to control the fire from spreading to a nearby power station, otherwise it could have resulted in a major mishap. The situation is now under control. Some of the employees who were trapped inside the warehouse were rescued with the assistance of the police,” he added.

The cause behind the fire is yet to be ascertained.
