Lima, Feb 26 (IANS/EFE) At least 19 people were killed and 37 injured when a bus plunged into a ravine in central Peru, police said.

The bus was approaching the capital city of Lima from Huancayo city Friday when it ran off the road and fell 180 meters to the bottom of a ravine.

Preliminary investigation indicates the crash was caused by the driver’s attempt to pass another vehicle, highway patrol officer Maj. Yordi Carbajal told Canal N television.

Rescue efforts were on and the toll could climb, police said, adding that the injured were taken to hospital in the Peruvian capital.
