NEW DELHI - A gang of robbers broke into four locked flats in an apartment block in Delhi’s Dwarka area and escaped with cash and jewellery amounting to lakhs of rupees, police said Sunday.

According to police, the theft was discovered Friday when one of the flat owners, Ashutosh Anand, a manager in a private company in Gurgaon, returned home with his family from Mumbai and found his flat in South Delhi Apartments in Sector 4 ransacked.

“A wooden cupboard was broken and Rs.10,000 in cash and jewellery worth Rs.5 lakh missing,” said a police officer.

Anand informed police, who reached the spot and found out that not only did the robbers target Anand’s flat but also broke in into three others - all of whose occupants were out.

“The robbers only targeted locked flats. They had done a recee of the apartment block, noted the locked flats and then robbed those,” the officer said, adding the security guard and neighbours were being questioned and several criminals of the area had been rounded up.

The owners of the robbed flats have been informed of the crime. Police is yet to estimate the total value of the things looted from the other three flats as the owners are yet to arrive.
