Lalgarh toll rises to nine

KOLKATA - The deaths in the Netai village carnage near the Maoist-affected Lalgarh area in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district rose to nine as one of the injured died of her injuries at a state-run hospital here Sunday.

Arati Mondal, 50, died at SSKM Hospital, triggering protests by Trinamool Congress activists who alleged negligence in her treatment.

The victim was admitted to the general surgery ward with multiple bullet injuries in the lower abdomen when assailants allegedly backed by the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Jan 7 triggered violence in the village.

Geetali Adak, 40, succumbed to her injuries in the SSKM hospital Friday.

Five others were admitted in the same hospital with serious injuries in the incident.
