Quito, Jan 17 (IANS/EFE) The president of Ecuador’s Delfin Sporting Club football team was gunned down in the coastal city of Manta, according to a media report.

Honorio Cevallos was speaking with his team coach Juan Carlos Bedolla at a restaurant during the weekend when a man shot him several times.

Reports said two men were involved in the killing who later fled in an automobile.

Cevallos was taken to a clinic, where he died while being treated by doctors.

Two women were also with him. One of them - identified as Gina Saldarriaga - was shot three times and was hospitalised, but the severity of her wounds has not been known, the El Comercio newspaper reported.

Delfin Sporting Club will be competing for the provincial championship over the next few months in an effort to join Division B of the Ecuadorian soccer league.
