RANCHI - A local court Tuesday granted bail to a professor of the St Xavier’s college, arrested last week on charges of removing the veil of a female Muslim student.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Vijay Kumar granted bail to Father Aframe Bage on two sureties of Rs.5,000.

The professor was arrested Saturday after Muslim community members demonstrated against him for removing the veil of Neha Parveen, who was participating in student protests against fee hikes in the college campus Friday.

Bage, while trying to pacify the students, wanted to ascertain their identities and removed Neha’s veil.

Members of the Muslim community demonstrated at different places in Ranchi Saturday, blocking roads and attacking shops. Protesters also burnt tyres at two places. Commuters faced difficulties as the roads were blocked at four busy areas.

However, the Church had expressed unhappiness over the arrest of the professor. Classes at St Xavier’s college were suspended in protest.
