Buenos Aires, Dec 28 (IANS/EFE) Eight armed people Monday attacked a police station on the outskirts of the Argentine capital and freed 11 prisoners. One of the escapees was later recaptured.

“It was a highly audacious act,” said Juan Carlos Paggi, the police chief in the province of Buenos Aires, confirming to radio stations the attack on a police station in the town of Glew, 30 km from the city of Buenos Aires.

Two of the freed prisoners had been arrested for armed robbery and it is presumed that they were freed by their companions, one of whom apparently was wounded during the attack.

The Buenos Aires metropolitan area, where it is estimated that some 10 million people live, has the highest crime rates in the country.
