CHANDIGARH - A pregnant woman was given blood of a wrong group at a government hospital here leading to the death of her baby in the womb, officials said Saturday. The hospital has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

According to the officials, full-term pregnant Suman was admitted to the hospital in Sector 16 Friday.

She was given blood of a wrong group and her condition started deteriorating. Following this, doctors referred her to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here late Friday.

“The baby in the womb had already died before she was brought to the PGIMER. One of her kidneys has also failed,” said an official of PGIMER Saturday.

M.P. Singh, official spokesperson of the government hospital, Sector 16, said: “We have recorded the statements of doctors and other hospital staff who were on duty at the time of the incident.”

“Suman was transfused wrong blood and we will try to identify the negligent official during the inquiry,” he said.

On July 21, a woman gave birth to a still-born baby as she was allegedly not attended to promptly by doctors at the same hospital.
