LUCKNOW - Two men were beaten to death by a group of villagers in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district Wednesday after they were caught while trying to break into a house, police said.

The duo, believed to be members of the notorious Bawaria gang, were part of a seven-member armed group which tried to rob a house in Manjoorgadhi village.

“The two men, aged around 40, were sneaking into the house of Dinesh Jatav along with their five accomplices, who managed to escape by firing in the air,” police inspector Anuj Kumar told reporters in Aligarh, some 300 km from Lucknow.

“During the process, the two even attacked the locals by firing at them from their country-made pistols, but luckily no one was injured. Later, locals snatched their pistols and beat them with wooden sticks, iron rods and bricks. The two died on the spot, much before we could reach there,” he added.

Police have not registered any case yet against the villagers.

“It appears locals attacked the two men in self-defense. An enquiry is being carried out,” Kumar said.
