LUCKNOW - Twenty-five people were Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Uttar Pradesh for the murder of a police constable in 2003, police said.

Bareilly’s additional district judge-II acquitted 19 others for want of evidence.

Constable Mayaprasad Awasthi was killed Jan 2, 2003 when several men from Ratangarh village attacked a police team looking for some auto-lifters.

Two other policemen were injured in the attack, police inspector Jayaram Singh said in Bareilly, around 250 km from here. A total of 44 people were booked in connection with Awasthi’s murder.
