Police asked to be vigilant about women’s safety

NEW DELHI - Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna Tuesday directed Delhi Police to be more vigilant about women’s safety, especially those working in BPOs, even as there has been no headway in last week’s gangrape of a woman.

Khanna said that in a recent meeting held between Delhi Police and representatives of 21 BPOs based in Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida, a set of measures to ensure safety of women working at night was agreed upon.

He said measures like installation of GPS systems, issuance of identity cards to cab drivers, presence of security guards in cabs, random checks and increasing presence of police on specific routes during night will be taken.

He was speaking in the backdrop of last week’s gangrape of a 30-year-old woman from Mizoram working in a BPO, who was abducted by four men and gangraped in a moving goods carrier Nov 24.

The victim, along with another woman, was dropped barely 100 metres away from her home by her office cab in Nanak Pura area of south Delhi.

The woman was abducted, and the men then drove all the way to Mongolpuri in northwest Delhi and dumped her there before she called for help.
