MELBOURNE - A total of 100 drivers were nabbed because of drunk driving during a police operation in Melbourne Saturday, a media report said.
A 24-year-old woman had a blood alcohol reading five times over the legal limit, while an 18-year-old learner driver tested positive for methamphetamines and cannabis, after being pulled over for displaying no “L-plate” and without the required accompanying responsible driver, Australia’s AAP news agency reported.
The operation - called Ring of Steel - deployed 200 police officers, who breath-tested a total of 9,748 motorists in nine breath-testing sites covering all city exits.
Police Inspector Stephen Mutton said the operation targeted drink and drug drivers as they headed out of Melbourne to their homes in the suburbs.
