NASHIK - Suspended Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator Dilip Wagh and his personal assistant Mahesh Mali have been remanded to police custody till March 3 for allegedly raping a 22-year-old woman here, police said Sunday.

A Nashik trial court has remanded Wagh and his personal assistant to police custody till March 3, a police officer said here.

The duo were apprehended by Mumbai police late Saturday from Pali Hill area of Bandra west, Mumbai, and were handed over to the Nashik Police Sunday morning.

According to police, Wagh and Mali allegedly raped the woman in a government guest house (in Nashik) last Monday (Feb 21). They have been booked under Section 376-G (committing gangrape) of the Indian Penal Code.

An embarrassed NCP had Saturday suspended Wagh, elected from Pachora in Jalgaon district.

Wagh, son of senior politician Omkar Wagh, a two-time legislator from the same constituency, was absconding since then, prompting the party to initiate the disciplinary proceedings against him.

According to Nashik police, Wagh and Mali are said to have lured the girl from Aurangabad to Nashik on the pretext of giving her a job.

When she reached Nashik last Monday, they raped her in a government guest house where they were staying. The girl registered a police complaint the next day.
