Police arrest betting gang in Ghaziabad

GHAZIABAD - Police Sunday arrested four businessmen from Ghaziabad for taking bets on the India-England World Cup cricket match and recovered around Rs.150,000 from them along with a cache of communication equipment.

In the raid conducted Sunday evening, the police also recovered a router equipped with a broadband connection with their betting counterparts in Dubai, police said.

The arrested men were Sanjay Garg, the gang leader a resident of Rishpalpuri, Saurabh Sharma of Chandrapuri, Ram Milan Giri alias Netaji of Bamheta and Gaurav Goel of Rishpalpuri, the official said.

The police team recovered 11 mobile phones, two laptops, a scanner, a printer, a television set, some bottles of whiskey and two pistols from their operation base.

According rough estimates, the gang was involved in betting transactions of crores of rupees, with up to Rs.25 lakh a day, he said.

The gang revealed they had links in Mumbai, Delhi, Mathura, Agra and Ghaziabad, the official added.

“They were running a posh office from the IInd floor of a residential building in Richhpalpuri,” said station in charge Gajendra Singh, who led the raid.
