Bihar’s hooch tragedy toll rises to 11

PATNA - The deaths in Bihar’s Samastipur district hooch tragedy rose to 11 Monday as two more people died since late Sunday, police said.

At least three people are still battling for life. “They are critical,” a police official said.

Police Sunday arrested 13 people for their involvement with the tragedy. Over 400 pouches of country-made liquor and 90 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor were seized from them.

Seven people, including four women, died Saturday after consuming spurious country-made liquorat Kashipur locality of Samastipur, about 100 km from here, and two more died Sunday.

Samastipur Superintendent of Police Daljit Singh said more arrests are likely to be made.

An official said the number of illegal liquor shops in Samastipur town has gone up in the last few years.
