Leopard skin, psychotropic drugs recovered in Srinagar

SRINAGAR - A large quantity of psychotropic drugs and a leopard skin were recovered from drug addicts and poachers in Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar Wednesday, police said.
The skin is of a fully grown leopard which must have been hunted by poachers for its costly skin. It would have fetched anywhere around Rs.200,000-Rs.300,000 outside the state,” Srinagar Senior Superintendent of Police Syed Ashiq Bukhari told reporters
Leopard is a protected animal under the wildlife protection laws of Jammu and Kashmir. It is also listed as an endangered species by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for Nature.
Anybody found poaching a leopard can be imprisoned for three years besides being fined under the wildlife protection laws here.
The drugs were mostly in injectable form. Some anti-social elements sell these drugs to lure the youth and trap them in the evil of drug abuse,” a police officer said.
