Two held in Delhi, one in Ghaziabad for Chandigarh heist

CHANDIGARH - Three members of a gang have been arrested from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for the biggest heist in this city in which jewellery worth over Rs.10 crore ($2.2 million) was looted from a showroom, police said Sunday.

Chandigarh Police with their counterparts in Delhi arrested the three men of the Gore Khan gang Saturday. Two men were held in Delhi while one in Uttar Pradesh.

“It was a joint effort of the Chandigarh Police and Delhi Police. Two accused were arrested from South Extension in Delhi while one was nabbed from Vaishali in Ghaziabad. A significant portion of the stolen jewellery has been recovered from them. The hunt is on to nab the remaining accused,” a police official said.

About 10-15 robbers dressed in police uniforms looted jewellery worth over Rs.10 crore from the Tanishq showroom in Manimajra town here early Wednesday. They overpowered two security guards and gained entry into the showroom after breaking its locks.

The arrested accused were identified as Paras (the kingpin of the gang), Bhure Khan and Manav Soni.

“The accused had met each other while they were lodged in some Uttar Pradesh jail. Some of them were staying at a rented accommodation in Manimajra since last month and had visited the Tanishq showroom a couple of times before committing the crime. They had done a recce of the entire area,” the police official said.

Police said the case was cracked after Delhi Police scrutinised the call details of the mobile phones of two suspects.
