Rio de Janeiro, Jan 16 (IANS/EFE) A small plane crashed in a mountainous region of central Brazil, killing all six people on board, officials said.

The plane went down Friday night for unknown reasons near Senador Canedo town in Goias state, just 16 km from the landing strip, firefighters said Saturday.

The aircraft, a single-engine Beech 22, exploded and burst into flames before crashing to the ground. It was flying from Brasilia to Goiania.

The region was being battered by heavy rains when the plane crashed into the side of a hill, they said.

Among the victims was a 12-year-old boy named Gabriel Marques Siqueira Campos, the grandson of Jose Wilson Siqueira Campos, governor of the neighbouring state of Tocantins.

Two of the boy’s friends and their mother also perished in the crash, along with the pilot and co-pilot.

All six bodies have been found.
