WASHINGTON - Federal officials Sunday filed five charges against the suspect in the shooting of US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Six people were killed Saturday in the attack on Giffords, who was outside a supermarket holding a citizen’s outreach event in her district in Tucson, Arizona. Giffords survived a gunshot which put a bullet through her head, but doctors were optimistic she would recover.

The federal charges against suspect Jared Lee Loughner, 22, were filed for deaths and injuries to federal employees and officials who were at the event. Other charges will likely be filed at the local level.

The charges include the attempt to kill Giffords, two murder charges for the deaths of a federal judge and one of Gifford’s aides, and two other attempted murder charges involving two other US government employees or officials, CNN reported.
