LUXOR - Eight US tourists were killed and 21 injured Sunday when their bus collided with a truck in southern Egypt, security sources said.

Two Egyptians - the bus driver and the tour guide - were also injured.

The bus, carrying 37 US tourists, was heading to Abu Simbel temple, when it collided with the truck parked on the side of the road, around two kilometres south of Aswan city.

Traffic accidents are common in Egypt due to poor road conditions, weak enforcement of safety regulations and reckless driving.

Some 8,000 people die and 32,000 are injured on Egypt’s roads each year, according to official statistics.
