KOLKATA - A day after a student was killed and 10 were injured in two separate clashes in West Bengal, Governor M.K. Narayanan Friday expressed concern over the growing incidents of campus violence and appealed to students to keep education as their foremost priority.
“I am greatly worried and deeply grieved at the growing incidence of campus violence across the state,” said Narayanan.
“Campus violence in West Bengal leading to serious injuries and even fatalities, apart from being a human tragedy of monumental proportions, is adversely affecting the state’s image, which has a well-deserved reputation for excellence in the pursuit of knowledge,” said a press statement issued by the Raj Bhavan.
At least 10 students were injured and one was killed Thursday in two separate incidents of clashes between the supporters of Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad (TMCP), a students’ arm of Trinamool Congress, and the Students Federation of India, the students’ wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in the state.
“The institutions should not become an arena for violent confrontations on account of political or other reasons. For a student, education is the first and foremost priority. I, hence, appeal to students to desist from violence and refrain from its path,” added the press statement.
