KOLKATA - Four members of Trinamool Congress’s students wing were arrested Friday for clashes with a rival student union in West Bengal Thursday, which left one dead and several injured, police said.
“Sourav Santra of Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad (TMPC) was arrested for the death of Student Federation of India (SFI) supporter Swapan Kole,” said a senior police officer.
Kole was thrashed while filing nomination for college elections at Andul College in Howrah district Thursday afternoon following a clash between the TMCP and the Students Federation of India (SFI) - the students’ wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist.
“Santra was arrested after the victim’s family lodged a complaint with the police. He was presented at the Howrah chief judicial magistrate’s court and was remanded to police custody for 10 days,” said Howrah Superintendent of Police H.K. Kushumakar.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police arrested Kaushik Majhi, Ram Manahor Chourashia and Karan Chauhan for the clash between the two groups outside Asutosh College in south Kolkata, which left 10 students injured.
“Both Kaushik and Ram are ex-students while Karan is a final-year student. They will be brought before the court Saturday,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south division) Supratim Sarkar.
