LUCKNOW - A gangster carrying a reward of Rs.50,000 for his capture was gunned down by security forces in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras area Friday while his accomplice managed to escape, police said.

Kamlesh Yadav, who was around 30 years old and had over 12 criminal cases, including murder, abduction and other heinous crimes pending against him in various parts of Uttar Pradesh, was shot dead by police in Darshna village on the outskirts of Hathras, some 300 km from Lucknow.

“Acting on a tipoff, a team of district police and the Special Task Force (STF) carried out a joint operation during which Kamlesh was shot dead,” police inspector R.D. Singh told reporters in Hathras.

“He (Kamlesh) primarily used to operate in the western regions of Uttar Pradesh and had links with criminals in Bihar and Delhi,” he added.

A pistol and several live cartridges were recovered from Yadav’s possession, police said. Yadav was a native of Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district.
