NEW DELHI - A 26-year-old woman was found hanging in her room in central Delhi Tuesday afternoon, police said. The woman’s father has alleged that her husband had been pressurising her for Rs.2 lakh and a car as dowry.

Harpreet Kaur was brought to the Metro Hospital in Ranjit Nagar at around 3 p.m., where the doctors pronounced her dead.

Harpreet’s husband Gurudev Singh, 28, and some members of his family have been detained for questioning, a senior police officer said.

Singh said that at around 2.30 p.m., he found his wife hanging from the ceiling fan in her room, after which he and his family rushed Harpreet to the hospital.

She was depressed for sometime due to health reasons, Singh said.

“The body has been sent for post-mortem. A case of dowry death has been registered. As they were married four years ago, an inquiry by a sub-divisional magistrate has been initiated,” the police officer said.

Manjeet Singh, the father of the deceased, registered a complaint saying that Gurudev had been harasssing Harpreet for the last six months, demanding Rs.2 lakh and a car as dowry.

He also told us that Gurudev Singh, who works in a multinational company in Gurgaon, was asking regularly for the car as he was finding it difficult to commute to his office, the police officer said.
