KARNAL - Seema, who fought an arduous battle of justice for her brother and sister-in-law, who were murdered for honour in 2007, has complained to the police of a threat to her life.

In her complaint, Seema, herself posted as a constable in Yamunanagar district, says that her sister-in-law Babli’s family had hired murder convict Virender Singh, out of jail on parole till Dec 31, to kill her.

“We have recorded the statements of Seema and started conducting raids to nab Virender,” Karnal Superintendent of Police Rakesh Arya said here Tuesday.

Seema was earlier posted at the Haryana Police Academy (HPA) here but was transferred to Yamunanagar Dec 26. She filed her complaint Dec 25.

“Virender Singh, who is familiar with Babli’s family, was seen near HPA few days ago. He has been hired by Babli’s family to kill me,” Seema said.

The murdered couple, Manoj, 23, and Babli, 19, had married in 2007 against their families’ wishes. They eloped in May 2007 and were murdered the next month by Babli’s family.

In a landmark decision, a Karnal court in March 2010 had sentenced five people - Babli’s brother, cousins and uncles - to death and one to life imprisonment for killing the couple. Seema had played a crucial role in taking the case to its logical end.
